THE IMPORTANCE OF WEIGHT TRAINING IN THE THIRD AGE

According to Euromonitor Internacional, which in a recent study presented the top 5 of countries with older populations, Portugal occupies the 5th position.

It is estimated that in three decades, 47.1% Portuguese population will be 55 years old or more.

Currently, the elderly population in Portugal is characterized by a sedentary lifestyle, inactivity, isolation and illness, which makes aging an increasingly precocious and distant process from the concept of quality of life, in this context and given the values presented, it is time to change the daily lives of this population.

Second, Coelho and Natalli (2010) aging is a natural process, where countless transformations occur.

The musculoskeletal and articular system is one of the most effective, due to the progressive decrease in the levels of steroid hormones, the increase in the levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines, decrease in protein intake, consequently influencing the reduction in the size and number of fibers (sacropenia ) and decreased muscle mass.
This entire degenerative process, together with physical inactivity, contributes to a loss of joint mobility, muscle atrophy and loss of bone mass (LOPES et al., 2015, p. 39).

Rocha (2013) pointed out that weight training is essential to restore bone mass and contributes to the maintenance of balance, reducing the risk of falling

Almeida (2010) referred that weight training is an instrument that helps in the maintenance and prevention of psychosocial health of the elderly, as it provides pleasure, joy and relaxation, which helps the individual to integrate society with autonomy, independence, team spirit , promoting inclusion and providing benefits that contribute to reducing depression, sadness and loneliness typical of this phase.

According to Miranda (2014), bodybuilding is an anaerobic physical activity capable of developing skeletal muscle capacity through resistance exercises.

In the case of people with heart problems, bodybuilding acts as a preventive, as it does not overload the aerobic muscle.

Thus, it is possible to conclude that weight training brings benefits at different levels for the elderly, however the practice of this modality must be properly guided by a specialized professional so that everyone has individual monitoring of their biological characteristics.
